UPDATE: SF’s Iconic “Tommy’s Joynt” is NOT Permanently Closed
UPDATE: Good news! Tommy’s Joynt is NOT closing down permanently. (Even though Google says it did) https://brokeassstuart.com/2020/09/02/good-news-tommys-joynt-apparently-not-permanently-closed-after-all/
“We’re not permanently closed! We’re temporarily shut down” – Chris Henry, owner of Tommy’s Joynt, who emailed his update to Broke-Ass Stuart
But are they actually open yet? Maybe!
It doesn’t appear so.On the Tommy’s Joynt website it says “We are open 11am-7pm during the shelter in place” and has a link to order online, but on Uber Eats it says, “Currently unavailable”On September 3rd, Uber Eats says “Opening at 11am“ (instead of “unavailable” that it said yesterday) but every single item to order (except root beer, for some reason) is listed as “sold out” – We checked just after 11am so although it’s possible that they were so popular that they actually did sell out of every item (we hope!!), or it could also mean that they actually aren’t open yet and set an inventory of 0 for most items.
Regardless, the whole situation seems very confusing and we have no idea when they truly are opening.
In response to the rumors of being closed, Tommy’s Joynt wrote on Facebook that they “will continue staying open with Uber Eats delivery.” But later they updated their post to remove the mention of being open for delivery and instead wrote a more general post stating that they will be “opening back up very soon!“
EaterSF also reported on the conflicting information and has been unable to confirm directly with the owners that Tommy’s truly will be reopening “Here’s hoping the restaurant’s elliptical communication is because they’re busy preparing to reopen, and not a sign that bad news has just been postponed, instead of corrected.“
So please note this is a fluid situation and information (even from Tommy’s Joynt directly) may change. We’ll do our best to keep you updated.
Thanks to Broke-Ass Stuart for the heartbreaking news that it appears that SF’s iconic hof-brau might be closed for good.
The long-running institution on Van Ness, which opened in 1947, announced their temporary closure on March 22nd to comply with the shelter-in-place order.
As of today, Google lists Tommy’s as “Permanently Closed” and Broke-Ass Stuart reports that the restaurant’s phone has been disconnected and that they haven’t responded to any Facebook messages. They finally responded!

So although it’s not 100% confirmed, things aren’t looking good for Tommy’s. And to make matters worse, someone tagged the iconic Tommy’s sign. 2020 sucks.
