This is the Bay Area’s First New Campground in Decades

The San Francisco Bay Area has a brand new campground. which opened on Friday, August 27, 2021.

Located within Coyote Hills Regional Park and next to the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay in Fremont, the 60-acre Dumbarton Quarry Campground on the Bay is the East Bay Park District’s first full-service campground, complete with 63 campsites, a camp store, showers, an amphitheater, a playground, Wi-Fi, and picnic areas.

2021 Camping Fees and Charges
– Campsite: $45 a night water only, no electrical or sewer
– Campsite: $65 a night sewer, water, electric up to 50 amp
– Overflow Parking: $8 a night per vehicle limited availability
– Reservation Fee: $8 per site
– Dog Fee: $2 each per day
– Guide Dogs/Service Animals: Free

It has easy access to nearby Ardenwood Historic Farm, Mission Peak Regional Preserve, and Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.

The Park District is in the process of completing a design plan to incorporate 306 acres of the former Patterson Ranch property into the Park.

History
Tuibun Ohlone Indians inhabited a nearby village for 2,000 years before the arrival of Europeans. Their descendants preserve Ohlone culture with programs and special events at adjacent Coyote Hills Regional Park. Subsequent land use has included ranching and farming.

Dumbarton Quarry was in operation from the 1950s through 2007. The gravel was used to build parts of San Francisco and Oakland International Airports, highways, and many other projects. Quarrying changed a 190-foot hill into a pit 22 acres across and 320 feet below sea level at the deepest point, making it the deepest human-made point in North America.

Filling the pit with clean fill from Bay Area construction projects, East Bay Regional Park District, in partnership with The DeSilva companies, including Dumbarton Quarry Associates, Pacific States Environmental Contractors, Inc., and DeSilva Gates Construction, and with the assistance of the City of Fremont, transformed the depleted quarry into a beautiful new recreational resource. Trails connect the campground to adjacent Coyote Hills and the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge for hiking, bicycling, picnicking, and viewing of the abundant wildlife.
