Pescadero’s Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park could get a major expansion. The Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), a Palo Alto-based nonprofit, plans to donate 132 acres of oceanfront land just south of the lighthouse to California State Parks. The addition would increase the park from 75 acres to 207 acres, creating space for new hiking trails and public access along more than a mile of coastal bluffs.

The park is home to the West Coast’s tallest lighthouse, a 115-foot white brick tower built in 1871. Closed for 25 years, it is slated to reopen in spring 2027.

State parks officials also announced plans to expand Mount Diablo State Park with a 101-acre donation called Black Point Slope, which includes popular hiking trails. Additional proposed acquisitions would add land to Big Basin Redwoods, South Yuba River, and Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve.

The expansions follow a new law, SB 630, signed last year by Gov. Gavin Newsom, which streamlines donations and purchases of land adjacent to state parks. Over the past 15 years, California has added little new land to its state parks system, despite population growth.
