Oakland Chinatown’s New $2 Flat-Rate Parking

New garage parking deal launches in 3-year pilot to boost visitors

Oakland Chinatown is trying something new to bring more people back after dark.

Starting now, you can park for just $2 flat-rate at Pacific Renaissance Plaza during evening hours as part of a new effort to boost foot traffic and support the neighborhood’s shops and restaurants.

The discounted parking is available after 4pm Monday through Saturday and after 2pm on Sundays, and city leaders say the program will stay in place for the next three years.

Business owners say the incentive comes at an important time. While Chinatown still sees a steady crowd during the day, many merchants say the neighborhood gets noticeably quieter in the late afternoon and evening, with some stores closing early due to lighter foot traffic.

The new rate is cheaper than nearby street parking, which can run up to $3.50 an hour, and leaders hope the lower cost and convenient garage access will encourage more people to stop by for dinner, shopping, or an evening stroll.

The $270,000 initiative is backed by a partnership between state, county and city agencies along with the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce.

Along with discounted parking, Oakland Chinatown’s night markets and neighborhood festivals will also help bring more energy back to Chinatown and encourage people to spend more time in one of Oakland’s most historic commercial districts.
