Event Details

This is a rare chance to witness a classic in the Kabuki theater style, with the elaborate kimonos and painted faces and all. Part song & dance, part avant-garde theater, Kabuki has become a genre in itself.

If you are curious why Kabuki continues to entertain millions, this is a rare chance to see one of the classics.

It is a movie of a Japanese play but even though it’s in Japanese there’s English commentary so you can follow along. It’s free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The Subscription List (Kanjincho), one of the most popular plays of its kind is playing. The play recounts General Yoshitsune’s narrow escape from capture through the guileful intrigue of his loyal retainer Benkei. Starring some of the greatest Kabuki actors of our time, including Ichikawa Danjuro XII, Nakamura Tomijuro V, and Onoe Kikugoro VII.
