Calling all local history buffs: want to volunteer a short amount of time to share the wealth?
The Peralta House Museum of History and Community is training people on Wednesday evenings in April to lead tours at the birthplace of Oakland. Be prepared to attend all Wednesday evening sessions in April and one on May 4th.
Schedule: Wednesdays 4/6, 4/13, 4/20, 4/27, and 5/4, 2011, 6pm-8pm
After attending the training, Tour Leaders volunteer once per month to educate local school groups, neighborhood residents, and visitors from around the world.
After an eye-opening crash course in the art of storytelling and the history of California, you’ll be encouraged to choose a topic of personal interest and craft an individualized tour of the Peralta House Museum. Tour guides are introduced to stories of Native Ohlone farmers, settlers on the historic Anza expedition including Luis Peralta, and current residents of Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood.
Good for Resume-Building: Docents learn leadership and public speaking skills from the best, take pride in their own history, and have a lot of fun. This is your chance to meet the brilliant, committed, friendly volunteers you’ve always wanted to know, and to help a fantastic organization share its inspiring message.
