Your Epic Bay Area Summer Events Guide

Here’s 52 can’t miss events – street fairs, festivals, outdoor movies, Fleet Week and more.

Summer gets funner with tons of awesome events still to come in the Bay. Here’s a list of fairs, festivals, movie nights, free concerts and fireworks you won’t want to miss that all take place during the San Francisco summer (i.e. through October).

Waterfront Festivals & Events

  • 32nd Annual Berkeley Kite Festival – July 29-30 – Berkeley Marina – This annual kite festival features kites as big as houses, free kite making kits, kite battles, free candy drops for kids and more.
  • Peace Lantern Ceremony – Sat 8/5 at 6:30 pm – north end of Berkeley Aquatic Park – A beautiful commemoration of the firebombings of Japanese cities during WWII, this peace lantern ceremony started out in 2002 with 100 people; this year has 48k RSVP’d on Facebook. Best of all, they provide all lantern making materials.
  • Rock Balancing at Crissy Field – Sat 8/26 – Learn how to stack rocks like a boss right on the Crissy Field waterfront from experts.
  • 22nd Northern California Dragon Boat Festival – Sept 23-24 – Lake Merritt – Colorful 40-foot boats race to the beat of Chinese Drums. Fun Fact: The first dragon boat team in the US was started by Oakland Fire Department.

$1 Summer Movies

  • Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse – through August 9th – 14 different Century & Cinemark theaters incl. SF in West Portal, Santana Row, Tanforan – Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 10 am – They’re showing $1 movies, perfect for the whole family.
  • Regal Summer Movie Express – $1 movies at 10 am on Tuesday & Wednesdays, but just in Dublin and Fairfield featuring the films Lego Batman Film, Spongebob Movie, Sing, Secret Life of Pets, and more.

Shakespeare & Theater in the Park

  • Midsummer Nights’ Dream Inferno Theater at 4 pm every Sat & Sun through August 13th in Berkeley’s John Hinkel Park Amphitheater
  • 34th Shakespeare in the ParkHamlet – Touring in Cupertino Memorial Park through Aug 6th on Fri, Sat & Sun nights; then Redwood City in late August; The Presidio afternoons in early September and McLaren Park in late September.
  • Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park Titus Andronicus – Just 5 performances – at parks in Vallejo from July 29-30; Martinez Aug 6; and Peralta Hacienda Park in Oakland from August 12-13.
  • Shakespeare or Space Wars -Peripatetic Players have a folding mobile stage and couldn’t decide between Romeo and Juliet and Star Wars so this made a ridiculous mash-up parody on tour of Bay Area Parks through August 13th including stops at Franklin Park in Alameda, Precita Park in SF, then San Mateo, Oakland, and Berkeley.
  • SF Mime Troupe Totally different and original; this troupe features live musical comedy and political satire; they’ve been doing it since 1959. This year’s production “Walls” tackles immigration with stops in Yerba Buena Gardens in SF, San Jose, Jack London Square, Petaluma and multiple parks in SF.

Outdoor Summer Concerts & Festivals

  • SFJAZZ at Sutro Baths  Sat 7/29 at 1 pm – Unique outdoor music experience by composer John Luther Adams – Inuksuit features anywhere from 9-99 percussionists in a large open-air space situated in Lands End around Sutro Baths. It’s an innovative soundscape experience where the audience can move around and create their own experience and it’s part of 5 day music festival.
  • Stern Grove – Every Sunday through August 27 – On July 30, SF Ballet performs their only Bay Area summer appearance; soul singer Mavis Staples closes out the Stern Grove Festival on 8/27 – Volunteer or enter picnic table lottery
  • Pier 39 turns 39 – Every Friday, there’s a different event or promotion including free clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl on September 1st, Roller Disco Party on September 8th – capped off with a Fireworks show on Saturday, October 14th
  • Presidio Twilight Every Thursday night – Campfires & food trucks through October
  • Presidio Picnic through October 29th
  • Golden Gate Park Band – Free Sunday symphony concerts at 1 pm through October 8th with different themes each week like Irish, Hungarian or a Ukranian celebration or tribute to Gilbert and Sullivan – They’ve been doing these free concerts for 135 years.
  • People in Plazas Free Music Festival – through October 7th – 120+ free lunchtime concerts at 15 different venues in SF mostly along or near Market Street
  • Yerba Buena Gardens Festival – Tons of free concerts & performances at the park through the end of September with lunchtime concerts midweek and weekend festivals like Brazil in the Gardens.

The Biggest Weekend of the Year

Mark your calendar to either make sure you’re in town or to get the hell out of town. Good thing is that there’s zero chance of the Giants having a playoff game the same weekend.
  • Fleet Week – Oct 2-9 – The Blue Angels typically start buzzing the city and practicing on Thursday with full practices and full shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Hardly Strictly Bluegrass – Oct 6-8 – They’ll start hinting at lineups on their Facebook page about a month out.

New San Francisco Night Markets

  • Commons on Third Thursday – New monthly market in Civic Center, Fulton and UN Plaza “The Commons” – Every third Thursday – August, Sept., & October – 3 stages live music, food trucks, Bocce Ball in Civic Center – 4 to 8 pm
  •  “Undiscovered SF” – Filipino Night Market* Every third Friday, kicks off on Friday, August 18th – Inspired by the vibrant night markets of Asia, this festive market celebrates the cultural heritage of Soma Philpinas with Filipino food, workshops, urban dance, art, and music including a performance by Lyrics Born on opening night. It takes place in the Old Mint, a historic building from the 1880s. *Contingent on a successful IndieGoGo campaign.

Food Festivals

  • Gilroy Garlic Festival – July 28-30 – $20 for adults – Huge festival featuring all things garlic with a massive outdoor kitchen and pyro chefs cooking over insanely large flames, plus chef battles, and even garlic ice cream
  • Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival – Sept 9-10 – This popular festival features over 50 vendors, dessert demos, and a chocolate school – Pay $20 for 15 chocolate tastings – 100% proceeds go to Project Open Hand (meals for seniors)
  • Eat Real Oakland Sept 22-24 – Big waterfront street food festival in Jack London Square – all food is $8 or less
  • San Francisco Street Food Festival Maybe October 14-15 – This festival outgrew The Mission, then it was at Pier 70 and now it’s up in the air for 2017 – Nothing has been announced officially yet except for the cryptic message on Facebook “Wouldn’t it be cool if we brought back the Street Food Festival? You have plans on 10/14 and 10/15? Asking for a friend…

Cultural Festivals

  • J-Pop Summit Sept 9-10 – Fort Mason – This Japanese cultural festival has gotten huge since it started in 2009; it features cosplay, big j-pop concerts, a sake summit and Ramen Summit – Tickets are $35 a day
  • Pistahan Filipino Parade & Festival – August 12-13 – Yerba Buena Gardens – Expecting 80,000 people, this is the largest Filipino-American celebration in the U.S. with a big food festival and tons of music, dance, and art.
  • Festival of the Chariots – Sat 7/30 – It’s an annual festival that’s been performed for thousands of years in India and now in its 51st year in SF. Watch the parade, as three large colorful chariots are pulled by rope through Golden Gate Park ending in Sharon Meadow for a big free Festival of India with free veggie food, music & ancient Indian dances.

Dog Events & Festivals

  • World Championships for Dog Surfing  – Sat 8/5 at Linda Mar State Beach in Pacifica – This is the cutest surfing competition you’ll ever see. Plus, there will be Frisbee catching contests, ball-fetch-in-water, doggie fashion shows and more. Surf contests include “double dog” surfing and tandem human/dog surfing.
  • 22nd Annual National Weiner Dog Races Sunday 8/6 at Santa Clara County Fairgrounds – See the fastest wieners in the West – Dachshunds will dash. Hosted by Wienerschnitzel. Free w/ $5 parking – which “Wiener” will go on to nationals?
  • Corgi Con – Fall 2017 –  Sat 10/21 at Ocean Beach near the Cliff House – This is an insanely popular gathering that features a massive group photo and “corgi ninja warrior” agility courses for dogs with stumpy legs.
  • Bark in the Park San Jose – Sat 9/16 – San Jose at William Street Park (just north of Kelly Park past the 280) – This is the largest dog festival in the US with 15,000 humans, 3,500 dogs  & god knows how much poop in a tree lined park with contests & vendors – Free with $5 donation per dog encouraged.

Summer Outdoor Movie Nights

  • Check out all the remaining outdoor movie nights – Orinda, Pleasanton, Menlo Park, Redwood City at Courthouse Square, Jack London Square, Walnut Creek, Marin County Mart Wednesday nights on Santa Cruz beach, Alameda, Danville, and Pier 39 last Fridays.
  • Berkeley Art Museum is showing West Side Story on July 29th on their 30-foot-wide outdoor digital screen.
  • San Jose hasStarlight Cinema every Saturday in August at St. James Park with movie-related fun and games starting about an hour before the film
  • Film Night in the ParkSan Francisco – Footloose (8/5) at Dolores Park, La La Land (8/26) at Wash. Sq. Park, The Graduate (9/9) at Union Square, and Breakfast Club (9/23) at Dolores Park
  • 15th annual Film in the Fog in the Presidio features free popcorn; they’ll be screening “The Iron Giant” on the Civil War Parade Ground on 9/30
  • West Wind Drive Ins – in Concord and San Jose – Free Movie Night & $1 nachos – exact date not yet announced but they’ve teased it’ll be near Labor Day weekend; it’s typically a Thursday night.

The “Great American” Solar Eclipse

  • Eclipse – Monday, Aug 21st – First total eclipse in the US since 1979 – you’ll only get 76% coverage in SF and the peak will be about 10:15 am in the Bay Area. The closest place to drive to see the total eclipse is near Corvallis, Oregon. You need special eye protection (unless you’re in the total eclipse and then for a few minutes you can view with the naked eye.
  • Big gathering near Cupid’s Span in SF
  • Special events will be held at the Exploratorium – They’ll be telescopes and solar safety glasses on their plaza for viewing along with astronomers to answer questions
  •  Many libraries all over Bay Area hosting events.
  • Stay safe and watch online with NASA – They’ll have a live feed from 11 spacecrafts, the Int’l Space Station, 3 aircrafts and 50+ high altitude balloons. Want to see a total eclipse in SF – wait until December 31, 2252 ( the last one was 1424).

Summer of Love: 50 Years Later

  • Summer of Love at Library Most of the big “Summer of Love” events are over, but the SF Library has tons of free events and art exhibits like a 1967 Fashion Show at the Park branch library in the Haight on August 5th, talks about bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, and discussions on gender revolution
  • Art & history shows – Summer of Love and Haight (thru Oct 29 at Jewett Gallery in Main Library with rock posters, grass roots newspapers and flyers, and period photographs, with a separate history exhibit at “The Seen” at Park Branch in the Haight starting August 5th that focuses on the Haight/Ashbury of 1967 and what you would have seen on Haight Street with posters, fashion, and photographs of what the street looked like.
  • Jerry Day Concert  Sunday, August 6 – McLaren Park Jerry Garcia Amphitheatre – Jerry grew up in the Excelsior; this is the 15th annual tribute concert to all things Garcia and the Dead.

 Adult Entertainment

  • Folsom Street Fair – Sunday, Sept. 24 – 34th Annual – With 13 city blocks and 400,000 people, this is the world’s largest leather fair. It’s turned into the sort of Disneyland of leather fairs with lots of gawkers.
  • Up Your Alley – Sunday, July 30th on Dore Alley off of Folsom – This is the Fetish Street Fair for you if Folsom Street is too tame for you. Leather daddies rule with about 15,000 people in attendance.

Other Awesome Upcoming Events

  • 49ers Open Practice – August 5 at Levi’s stadium – $5 – Plus there will be free stadium grub – hot dogs, pizza, nachos, fries, pretzels, soft drinks – sadly, there’s a four free item limit per concession stand visit.
  • National Night Out August 1 – Neighborhood block parties all over the Bay hosted by local law enforcement.
  • Facebook County Fair – August 26th – Join Facebook for a free summer county fair with free parking, live music, cooking demos, a farmers market and 100% of ride proceeds going to local nonprofits.
